Heroes

Heroes are the men and woman spending this holiday season in harms way so that we don't have to. Heroes put out fires, drive ambulances, work in hospitals, man food shelters, and stand at the ready for that one day when your community needs them. There are heroes who've turned down better paying jobs to become teachers. Heroes coach Little League and volunteer to be Den Mothers. The word hero should never be preceded by "sports" or "rock'n roll". Heroes put on a brave face in front of their children when life's worries make them feel anything but brave. Heroes read to their kids every night no matter how tired they are. Heroes are accountable. Heroes look for solutions and they never give up. Heroes believe in second chances. Heroes try to understand what at first they can't see. Heroes accept diversity. Heroes help others even when they themselves have little. Heroes aren't afraid to say I'm sorry. Heroes say I love you at the moment when you need to hear those words the most. Heroes stand by their friends. Heroes remember when life was tough for them when they see others struggling. A hero appreciates the hard work it takes to become a good person and they understand that despite their best efforts they can do better. Heroes allow themselves introspection. Heroes live in the moment. Heroes plead for peace. Heroes understand that it's not what you have, it's whom you're with. Heroes are the people who have stood by you, supported you even with the mistakes you've made, noticed your successes, and encouraged you after disappointments.
Heroes inspire other heroes. Being with your hero helps you find perspective.
This holiday season seek out your hero, acknowledge them, and hold them tight. Keep in mind that you are somebody's hero.
